A 30 year old woman and three boys between the age of 10 and 14 years were booked on November 25 for allegedly insulting the national flag. A statement issued by Anand Police stated that during patrolling a police team noticed that the accused had hoisted the national flag at her residence and “had made distortions to it”
According to the police, the incident took place at Kadiyaval in Umreth in Anand on Tuesday. The woman along with her 10 year old son and two other minors have been booked for hoisting the national flag with distortion. The woman has been arrested and the three minors have been sent to juvenile home.
The police addressed the hoisting of the distorted flag as a ‘mischief’ by the children. BD Jadeja, Deputy Superintendent of Police of Anand division, said, “The three children had hoisted the national flag, where instead of the Ashok Chakra, a few Islamic inscriptions were drawn over it. Taking cognisance, an FIR was lodged yesterday and we have arrested the woman at whose residence the incident took place and three juveniles have been presented at the Bal Adalat.”
Consequently, the two were booked under section 2 of Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, for their ‘insult’ to the national flag.
“After initial investigation, Umreth police lodged an FIR on Tuesday, and detained the accused," said complainant Shaktisinh Zala, a head constable with Umreth police. "To celebrate Eid, these boys wanted to hoist a flag having Islamic symbols after seeing other residents doing so on their terraces. However, instead of a regular green flag, they purchased a tricolour having those symbols printed on it," he added.
This matter was brought to light on Tuesday by an Anand based activist Jignesh Prajapati. He had posted the video on his Twitter account wherein the boys can be seen with symbols of a crescent moon and a star instead of Ashok Chakra, on terrace. In his tweet he tagged both the Anand Police and the Gujarat Police.
