Veteran actress, Tanuja, turns 77 years old

Tanuja Samarth, popularly known as Tanuja, celebrates her 77th birthday today.

Tanuja was born on 23rd September 1943, to a Maharashtrian family. Her parents were filmmaker Kumarsen Samarth and actress Shobana Samarth. She has three siblings, including Nutan who is an actress too. Her parents parted when she was still a child.

As a child actress, her debut Bollywood movie was Hamaari Beti (1950) in which she acted alongside her sister Nutan. Her mother, Shobhana, produced the movie.

As an adult, she debuted in the movie ‘Chhabili' (1960). The movie was directed by her mother and had her sister, Nutan, in the lead role.
The film that truly marked her transformation to an adult heroine was ‘Hamari Yaad Aayegi'(1961).

The movie was directed by Kidar Sharma.
One of her early films in which she portrayed her remarkable acting was ‘Baaharen Phir Bhi Aayegi' which was directed by Shaheed Latif in the year (1966).

She won the Filmfare award for the Best Actress for her role in the film ‘Paise Ka Pyaar'. She has also portrayed her notable acting skills in various other movies like ‘Haathi Mere Saathi', ‘Door Ka Raahi', ‘Mere Jeevan Saathi', ‘Masoom’, ‘Pavitra Paapi', ‘Bhoot Bangla'.

During the mid 1960s, Tanuja started acting in Bengali films. She started with the film ‘Deya Neya' and then went on to act in various films like ‘Anthony-Firangee’ and ‘Rajkumari’.

She won various accolades for her acting- 2014 Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award, 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award of the Apsara Film and Television Producers Guild Award, 2013 Best Actress Award in a Marathi Movie at the 20th Life Ok Screen Award.

She got married to Shomu Mukherjee in the year 1973, but he died in the year 2008. She is a mother to two daughters- Kajol and Tanisha. Kajol is a renowned actress in the Bollywood industry.
