Semi-decomposed bodies of an elderly couple were recovered from an apartment in the city's Girish Park area in Kolkata on 24th November, Tuesday.
Neighbours alerted the police after they sensed that a foul smell was coming from a flat on the second floor of an apartment on Ram Dulal Sakar Street, a police officer said. After registering the complaint, the police broke into the flat and found the bodies of Biswajit Mitra (aged 71) and Sipra Mitra (aged 68).
"Preliminary investigation revealed that the couple was depressed due to financial crisis. Though we are yet to find any suicide note, it seems the duo died by suicide," the investigative officer at Girish Park police station said. The neighbours also suspect it to be a suicide as they were driven by years of financial loss and could barely manage to meet their daily basic necessities. The neighbours also pointed out that Biswajit was often heard saying that death was a more dignified deliverance than the hopeless life they led. Biswajit and Sipra also had no children.
Further, their bodies were sent for post mortem to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The police are awaiting the result of the post mortem so that the case can be taken up and they could investigate the matter further.
“We are still ascertaining whether they had committed suicide or these were natural deaths. One of them was lying on the bed and another on the sofa. Though it’s unlikely they died at the same time, we found no sign of foul play as the door was locked from inside. We have not found any poison or medicine strip around. One person could have died a natural death and the other committed suicide. We are waiting for the final post-mortem report,” said DC (central) Meeraj Khalid.
