Four top Indian badminton players including HS Prannoy, Commonwealth Game Gold medallist Parupalli Kashyap, doubles master Pranaav Jerry Chopra and RMV Gursaidutt have tested positive for the novel coronavirus. The badminton players have all tested positive for the novel coronavirus but are ‘asymptomatic.’ HS Prannoy, Parupalli Kashyap, Gurusaidutt, and Pranaav Jerry Chopra are currently under self-isolation.
An anonymous source from the Gopichand academy said, “The players took the RT-PCR test as a precautionary measure a few days back after one of them started to exhibit mild symptoms. Parupalli Kashyap, HS Prannoy, Gurusaidutt, and Pranaav Jerry Chopra tested positive for the virus but Saina Nehwal tested negative. Gurusaidutt’s wife Amulya Gulapalli has also tested negative for the virus.”
All of the four players are scheduled to get tested again on Monday for the second time.
The anonymous source from Gopichand said, “There have been cases when a lot of time the first test result comes false positive, so the players have been advised by the doctors to wait and monitor a few days and take a second test on Monday.”
Gurusaidutt had recently taken a break from training due to his wedding festivities. While the rest of the players have been training at the Pullela Gopichand Academy all that time. But the players from the Gopichand academy had attended Gurusaidutt’s wedding festivities on 25th November. Hence, all the badminton players from the Gopichand academy had to undergo the COVID-19 test as a precautionary measure.
Lakshya Sen, Ajay Jayaram, and Shubhankar Dey had tested positive for the novel coronavirus on reaching Germany for a tournament. They had to pull out of the SaarLorLux Open in the previous month. This came in after Lakshya Sen’s father and Coach DK Sen had tested positive for the COVID-19. Doubles player Satwiksairaj Reddy had also tested positive for the novel coronavirus back in August. He has returned to training after recovering successfully.
