PM Modi holds high level meeting

On Sunday, April 4, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, held a high level meeting to discuss all the coronavirus-related issues. In the meeting, the issues regarding the presently conducted vaccination drive in India as the number of infections are constantly rising. In the meeting participated all the senior officers including the Health Secretary, Cabinet Secretary, and the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister.

In the previous 24 hours, India recorded the highest rise in daily Covid cases, since the last seven months, with the country recording 93,249 new infections, which increased the total covid cases in the country to 1.24 crore. This is the biggest rise in daily infections after September 19, 2020, when the cases rose to 93.337 in a day.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), eight states in the country are responsible for 81.42 percent of the total cases that were reported in the last 24 hours. These 8 states include Maharashtra, Delhi, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
During the high level meeting, the Center has directed the states to take severe steps in order to ensure safety measures among the public, including the usage of masks and the need to maintain social distancing.

The growing difficulties in enforcing safety measures have been the sole reason for the sudden increase in the number of infections lately. However, the mutant strains add to the current spike as well, according to scientists. A top member of the Covid Task Force of the government, Dr. Randeep Guleria, who is also the chief of Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), asserted that it is high time now that a bigger range of stricter measures should be placed, including lockdown areas, containment zones, tracing, isolation, and ramping up testing.
