Ex-serviceman was held for leaking information to Pakistan.
Saurav Sharma, an ex-serviceman was arrested, along with Anas Gitauli who is a resident of Gujarat, by the Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) of Uttar Pradesh. They are accused of allegedly sending sensitive information about the country to Pakistan Intelligence agency as said by a senior official. Sharma has confessed that he had committed the crime. He has been booked under several sections.
The ex-serviceman, who is a resident of Hapur in Uttar Pradesh, is arrested and booked under multiple sections of IPC, Official Secrets Act (OSA) and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Prashant Kumar, Additional Director General of Police, of Uttar Pradesh, also said that certain documents were recovered from Sharma.
Certain reports state that the information used to get exchanged through a woman intelligence officer in Pakistan. In return for leaking the information, Sharma used to receive monetary benefits in exchange. ATS reached out to him with the help of inputs provided by the Lucknow-based Military Intelligence (MI) Unit. They received the information in early December last year and an operation was carried out accordingly. First Information Report has been lodged against Sharma and he has been brought before the court. He was also sent to seven-day police remand. According to some reports, Sharma was working for the Pakistan Intelligence agency situated in Karachi since 2016.
A press release by UP police stated that Sharma first came in contact with the Pakistan official on Facebook in 2014, where she appeared as a defense journalist. Apparently, he started sharing information in the form of texts, images, videos and WhatsApp calls since 2016.
While the process was ongoing with Sharma, Anas Gitauli was being brought to Lucknow. Anas was accused of sending money to Sharma on behalf of the Pakistan Intelligence agency. It is said the Anas’ elder brother was arrested by NIA Hyderabad a few days back.
