“U For Ugly”: 2 Bengal teachers suspended for teaching from alphabet book

The West Bengal government has suspended two teachers in East Burdwan district for teaching pre-primary students an abusive part in the book of the English alphabet to people of dark complexion. State Education Minister Partha Chatterjee took action in this matter taking cognizance himself.
In this book, U for 'Ugly' was taught to explain the word and image associated with the related letters to the students. A picture of a dark-colored boy was printed next to the letter.

Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said, "This book is not part of the textbooks specified by the Department of Education. The school itself has included this book. We will not tolerate any act which establishes prejudice in the minds of students".

Minister Chatterjee thanked the media persons for bringing this issue to light and said that teaching such things is a criminal matter. Taking action in this case, Shravani Mandal and Barnali Das have been suspended.

Even though the schools are now closed due to the lockdown, the matter came up when the father of a student of the school was teaching him at home with this book. He informed the other parents and was then informed to the Education Department.
