Babul Supriyo: Recent chain of events show that Bengal is fit for Presidential rule

Union Minister Babul Supriyo on Sunday said that the recent chain of events that took place in Bengal suggest that the state is a “fit case” for the imposition of President’s rule. The recent chain of events includes the arrest of al-Qaida linemen to the controversy involving a Sikh and his turban during the BJP protests in Bengal.

Babul Supriyo also said that the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee must have forgotten her battles at the grassroots levels as she is “oppressing” opposition parties in Bengal.

The Asansol MP, while addressing the reporters, claimed that the Police had isolated a member of the Sikh community in a “planned manner” and then assaulted him and pulled his turban during the BJP’s protest rallies in Kolkata.

Babul Supriyo said, “ The recent chain of events- ranging from the attack on Sikh community members, the arrest of al-Qaida operatives to brazen murder of Manish Shukla and other political opponents- show that it is a fit case for imposition of Article 365 in Bengal.”

Visuals of the Police beating up a Sikh man during BJP’s protest on Thursday went viral on social media. Controversy exploded after the netizens claimed that the Police had purposely pulled his turban during the brawl. However, the Police claimed that the Sikh man was carrying firearms and his headgear “had fallen off automatically during the scuffle.”

Counterattacking Babul Supriyo’s narrative and his claims that suggest that President’s rule should be imposed in the state, veteran TMC MP Sougata Roy said, “Babul is a newcomer in politics, having joined the BJP only a few years back. He has no idea about what he says. He doesn’t know that before imposing Article 365, an advisory under Article 355 has to be imposed by the Centre.”

Roy further affirmed the situation in West Bengal and claimed that Bengal doesn’t need the imposition of President’s rule. He also said that Manish Shukla’s murder was a fallout that resulted from an internal feud in the saffron party.

Sougata Roy furthermore added that Babul Supriyo was making “absurd claims to hog attention” as he was not getting enough prominence from his party. He said, “Supriyo is referring to some start incidents such as the murder of muscle man like Shukla due to BJP’s internal feud and Police action to quell a violent protest by the party.”

He furthermore added, “As far as arrests of al-Qaida linkmen are concerned, such things can happen anywhere. In that case, what does he have to say about the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh?”
