Sunil Gavaskar passed a controversial statement on Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma on Thursday. He was on the commentary panel for the IPL match between Punjab and Bangalore.
During the match, Virat Kohli dropped two catches of his counterpart- KL Rahul. The first time that he dropped the catch was in the 17th over at deep square leg when KL Rahul was batting on 83. The second time was in the 18th over when he was on 89. The KXIP skipper then went on to become the first player to smash a ton in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
In the commentary box, Sunil Gavaskar made a comment involving Virat Kohli’s wife- Anushka Sharma. Sunil Gavaskar said, “Inhone lock down mein to bas Anushka ki gendon ki practice ki hai.”
The comment was pungent and did not go well with Virat and Anushka’s fans. Many of them urged the BCCI to remove him from the commentary panel.
While making the statement, Gavaskar was referring to a video of Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli playing cricket in lock down. In the video, Kohli was seen bowling to Anushka before taking the stumps. Then Anushka was seen bowling to him.
However, Anushka Sharma has come back with a befitting reply for Mr Sunil Gavaskar. She posted a lengthy message on her Instagram story referring to the comment that Gavaskar made during the match. The message read:
“ That, Mr Gavaskar, your message is distasteful is a fact but I would love for you to explain why you thought of making such a sweeping statement on a wife accusing her for her husband’s game? I’m sure over the year you have respected the private lives of every cricketer while commentating on the game. Don't you think you should have an equal amount of respect for me and us?
I’m sure you can have many other words and sentences in your mind to use to comment on my husband’s performance from last night or are your words only relevant if you use my name in the process. Its 2020 and things still don’t change for me. when will I stop getting dragged into cricket and stop being used to pass sweeping statements?
Respectful Mr Gavaskar, you are a legend whose name stands tall in this gentleman’s game. Just wanted to tell you what I felt when I heard you say this.”
